How The Government Is Helping Consumers Take Advantage Of Solar Power

Faced with energy and natural resource crises, the U.S. government got on the solar energy bandwagon twenty years after the technology became popular with residential and commercial customers across the nation. In 2009, Congress passed the Solar Technology Roadmap Act, which contributes millions to the research and development of solar technology as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Although 2015 sees the final increase and year for the funds to aid researchers in the pursuit of solar powered everything, there are other grants and resources to help consumers take advantage of solar power in their homes and businesses.

Managing the Installation Expense of Solar Power

Federal Level

The initial expense of converting electric or gas power in your home or business is daunting, but less so when you find grants and federal aid. The federal assistance for solar power installation is a tax credit which you can claim up through the year 2016. It is uncertain whether or not the federal government will extend this credit beyond that fiscal year, but if you install a solar energy system anytime through December 31st, 2015, you are entitled to 30% of the total cost.

State, County, City and Local Levels

There are many states, especially those that have brown-outs or black-outs frequently, which offer additional credits and grant programs for consumers. California was one of the earliest states to offer these programs to residents who wanted to convert from electrical power to solar power.

Southern California has benefited immensely because of the amount of sunshine it gets all year long and the amount of power it takes to keep air conditioners and furnaces running. Several other southern states also have similar opportunities, but the grants and incentives are not limited to just this area of the country.

Solar Power Incentives for Businesses

Most of the available credits, grants and incentives are for residential installations. The same tax credit and regulations for residential solar energy systems apply to businesses as well, which is a very nice benefit to business owners who make the conversion. State and local grants, tax credits and incentives for business solar use vary widely, so you will have to check with your state's department of energy to see if your business qualifies and how to apply.

When You Cannot Get Solar Energy Without More Financial Help

If you want to take advantage of government help, but do not have enough money to pay for the installation and conversion, there are government lenders that provide loans to consumers for solar energy projects. Be sure to read the rules carefully, as some loans only apply to businesses. A few solar power installers also accept payment plans.
