A solar power system is an easy way to cut back your carbon footprint, control your energy costs, or go off-grid. The biggest part of a solar power system is the photovoltaic panels that gather up sunlight and start to produce energy. There are different kinds of PV panels that you might decide that you want to have as part of your system. Each of them has pros and cons and is suited to different uses. Speak to the company doing the installation about what kind of panels they think that you should get. 

Thin Film Panels

These panels are made of a thin silicon film that is put on glass, metal, or plastic. The fact that they are made out of a thin material makes the panels quite flexible. That means that they can be put on rounded surfaces, which can make them a good panel to use on a variety of roofs. Thin-film panels are the least expensive of all the kinds of photovoltaic panels, but are not quite as efficient as other panels. Their thinness also means that they aren't necessarily as visible when it comes to your house. However, this will help if you live someplace that values the aesthetic.

Polycrystalline Panels

In general, if you want to get a solar power system, these are probably the default panels that will be suggested to you. Default panels are the most commonly used panels, and of the three kinds of PV panels, are the ones that are in the middle of the range price-wise. Part of what makes them so common is the fact that polycrystalline panels are used in places like solar farms or other large-scale installations. They are also more efficient than thin-film panels. They generally have a long lifespan, but they will lose efficiency as they get older. 

Monocrystalline Panels

These panels have been around the longest. They also tend to be the most expensive, mostly because the process to make them is more costly and involved. They also tend to be slightly more efficient than polycrystalline panels, meaning they may provide a little more energy for your house. One big drawback that these panels have is that they are susceptible to high temperatures, and temperatures tend to get hotter on roofs because of the roofing material, so it's something to consider. 

If you want to go with a solar power system, talk to the installer about all the different kinds of PV panels.
